How to Measure Physical Activity Intensity

A person doing moderate-intensity aerobic activity can talk, but not sing, during the activity. A person doing vigorous-intensity aerobic activity cannot say more than a few words without pausing for a breath. The talk test is a rule-of-thumb method for estimating aerobic intensity.

Influence of stride frequency and length on running mechanics: a systematic review

Across the reviewed studies, higher stride rate at a fixed speed reduced vertical centre-of-mass excursion, ground reaction force and joint energy absorption. The review concluded that a higher stride rate may reduce several biomechanical factors associated with running injury. The included studies were small and methodologically varied, so they do not establish a universal target cadence.

Biomechanics and Physiology of Uphill and Downhill Running

Uphill running has a higher step frequency, shorter swing and aerial phase, and greater duty factor than level running. Downhill running has longer aerial time, lower step frequency and more rear-foot striking than level running. Downhill running emphasises eccentric work and energy dissipation; uphill running requires greater muscular work, particularly at the hip.

Toward a record-eligible sub-2-hour marathon: an updated integrative framework of physiological, technological, and cognitive determinants

VO2max, lactate threshold and running economy are physiological determinants commonly studied in distance-running performance. Marathon performance is multi-factorial and includes physiological, technological and cognitive determinants. Measurements depend on testing protocol and context, so values from different methods should not be treated as interchangeable.
